wtf p4k

Although it's somewhat entertaining and even slightly informative, I find Hipster Runoff's sense of humor to be bland and obvious, like the Mad TV or Family Guy of internet music criticism.. There's a sort-of-but-not-really-postmodern or "meta" element to it that should be a lot more clever than it really is.. Perhaps it if were 4-5 years ago (pre-youtube) this would be a bigger hit for me personally. These kids sure do love their 4chan and their "internet humor" .. as if the joke isn't old enough by now.. Yeah, I get it.. you're purposely using bad grammar and poor spelling with an abundance of common acronyms because that's now how people type since half of the country has been forced to learn how to communicate with a limit of 140 characters. It's even funnier the Nth time around. For example, on Hipster Runoff, songs are only referred to as "mp3s" because that's apparently what everyone calls songs now. Except in reality, this isn't true at all, even for really dumb people.. There's certainly absurdity to be found in a reference to "the new Crystal Castles mp3" but not enough that it's actually anything resembling humor.

However, it's not THAT annoying, and if you search long enough some of their posts are actually very funny, such as Local Hipster in Brooklyn hit by a bus 2 be alt.

So anyway, everything written so far really has nothing to do with Pitchfork or Kanye, other than how Hipster Runoff always makes a point to post about anytime Pitchfork issues a noteworthy ranking. About an hour ago, Pitchfork gave the new Kanye album a 10.0 out of 10, which I'm pretty sure is the first non-reissued hiphop album they've ever crowned with such a distinction. This will probably become a "huge" deal ("huge" in quotes, meaning that the 99% of Americans who don't read Pitchfork or care about music criticism do not care at all).

I really only decided to write about this here since I gave this album a listen last week and I was completely unimpressed. I mean, it's okay, but hardly "top 20 of the year" material.. which is a shame, because I was expecting to hear a 10 out of 10. But honestly, Odd Future and Pill and Big Boi have all put out stronger recent hiphop releases that were far less calculated. The reviewer describes this album as a "greatest hits" in itself, as if this is the new Purple Rain or Thriller, and it's just simply not. It's not bad.. but it's hardly 10 out of 10, and as far as I can tell it's my least favorite Kanye West album to date.
