80s Jams #51: Nirvana "About A Girl" (1989)

The song's melody is aching and wistful, sung over a simple chord progression, but subtle touches help flesh out the song: Chris Novoselic's bass line continues to ascend as Cobain repeats the same two chords during the verses; the chorus features a Cobain trademark, a slight key modulation whose chords land just a little bit away from where the ear expects; plus, on the Bleach version, harmony vocals and tambourines appear in the background. Similarly, Cobain's lyrics are full of wonderfully subtle associations and double meanings, plus an effacing humor that belies the narrator's desperate neediness and cynicism. -- Allmusic http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=33:fbfqxqehldte
