Village Voice "50 Worst Songs Of The 00's"

Maura Johnston and Christopher R. Weingarten have started posting their mostly on-target "50 Worst Songs Of The 00's" list in their Village Voice blog. It's kind of difficult to figure out how to navigate through the entire thing, but if you feel like checking it out here's the link.

Included at #25 is "Heart Songs," the final cut from Weezer's 3rd self-titled album (nicknamed by Weezer themselves as "The Red Album"). Maladroit is the last Weezer LP I've heard in full, so this was my first listen through "Heart Songs." It's quite unfortunately a new snake-like low for Rivers Cuomo, as difficult as this may be to perceive seeing as how "We Are All On Drugs" wasn't just a bad dream. I never imagined a band could break my heart in the way that Weezer has.

But anyway, if you're up for checking out the worst Weezer song ever recorded (which is hardly a song, in all honesty), the track can be found at this link, along with a short review.

Best TV Clips 2000-2009: Part Three

The decade-end feature concludes tonight with various amazing music clips from TV. "Best TV Clips" are able to say enough that it's not really necessary to post any "albums of the decade" or anything along those lines.. So this is gonna do it for the Taste My Kids decade-end wrap-up.

Best TV Clips 2000-2009: Part Two

Continuing with our series, tonight we enter the spectrum of "scripted" TV clips, a subjective term considering how improvisation likely played a part in the majority of these. One point worth noting: Taste My Kids vastly prefers Comedy TV to Drama TV for many reasons, so the "spectrum" in this case is actually not all that inclusive. Most of the best clips from drama shows are best enjoyed while watching an entire episode anyway, whereas comedy clips can easily be explained or taken out of context and still enjoyed.

If drama were included, Edgar's death scene in Season 5 of 24 would have made the cut, since it's one of the saddest things ever shown on TV. But there's no Youtube clip. So it's not very useful here.

Law And Order: SVU deserves special inclusion as well since every episode seems so dense with story and has consistently remained one of the darkest shows on network TV. (It's a show centered around the theme of sexual assault, so I don't see how this point is debatable.) However, choosing a best moment from SVU is kind of impossible and pointless, and there are hardly any good Youtube clips anyway.

Also not on Youtube: Freaks And Geeks. A personal favorite episode of mine is the first one I ever saw from January 2000, where Sam, Neil and Bill befriend the "new girl" and bring her along to shoot off model rockets, while Lindsay and her freak friends visit Jason Schwartzman at his retail store to inquire about purchasing horribly made fake ID's. Brilliant lolz, melancholy, nerdier than Weezer, awkward teenage storytelling at its finest.. Freaks And Geeks is possibly the best TV show of the decade. But unfortunately, there's no clips available on the internet.

Dexter headbutting Doakes is on Youtube, however, and it fucking rules, so we'll just post this now before shit gets official..

After "The Decade In Animation," Taste My Kids planned on completing the decade-end feature with 3 different sets of TV clips.. Amazing clips from reality TV, some amazing scripted TV moments, and amazing music performances. These will all be coming over the next few days. Today, we'll start with some amazing reality clips, or at least some of the best that can currently be found over youtube..

The Tom Green Show: Tom Brings Monica To Canada (February 14, 2000)
The Youtube channel TomGreenSketches is an outstanding resource for many of the best clips that were aired throughout 1999. However, only one Youtube clip currently exists from the special episode that guest starred Monica Lewinsky, which was this show's first new episode of the decade. I have this episode on tape somewhere, but I'm afraid to uploaded it, since Youtube would prolly remove it due to "copyright restrictions." Emo sigh...


The Tom Green Show: Tom Green's Cancer Special (May 11, 2000)
Walking the line between "brave" and "juvenile" ... This was probably Tom Green's most profound TV statement, which actually helped some American MTV viewers to identify testicular cancer and seek early treatment.

Judge for yourself...

Da Ali G Show: Borat sings "Throw The Jew Down The Well" (August 1, 2004)
I recall having this song stuck in my head fairly often throughout August 2004. That Borat can write some mighty catchy tunez.


Crossfire: Jon Stewart (October 15, 2004)
This clip eventually became the third most popular video of all time on iFilm.com, and partially helped in getting Crossfire cancelled 3 months later.


Too Late With Adam Carolla: Steve-O high as fuck (September 26, 2005)
Carolla was simply never able to get the audience to laugh, which is one huge aspect that made his short-lived late night talk show unbearably difficult to watch. Steve-O's guest appearance did little to increase audience reaction, but it still stands as one of the biggest WTF moments of recent TV history.

This became a popular clip on the E! pop-culture show The Soup. I recall being bored on a weeknight and sitting in my mom's basement, videotaping random TV clips for the Al compilation tape I was making, and my sister called me around 10:30PM and said something to the effect of "Michael! Turn on Bravo NOW!" It sounded important, so I switched channels and pressed record, and about 4 minutes later, I had this clip on tape and was decently stunned that this lady would consent to show a clip of her talking about her vagina on a basic cable reality show.

I was trying to find a good live clip for "Young Bride" off their 2006 album, but none was to be found.. which is unfortunate because this video kinda sucks, and I'm usually skeptical of songs that sound like this (referring to melodramatic "indie-rock" which usually includes trumpets or violins or some shit..) But these guys do it the right way.

The earlier clips that were posted from at.the.drive.in, Green Day and Interpol should probably be a good indicator that I am currently in full nostalgia mode for the early 2000's. The earliest parts of any decade are becoming more noteworthy to me, usually because they're such strange and forgotten times.. 1980-1982, 1990-1992, and now 2000-2002.. A 3-year span which seems so distant, and yet was definitely less than 10 years ago.

Continuing with this theme, here's a few PJ Harvey clips off Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea, her best stuff IMO..

The Decade In Animation (Shorts)

The past few posts have been building to the "decade end" features which will hopefully be arriving here quickly over the next month.. They're all going to be from one person's perspective, but I'll be speaking of Taste My Kids using plural pronouns such as "we" and "ours" to make the lists seem like they're worth more than they actually are (a writing tactic I used often on the old version of this website). Today's list is regarding the decade in animation.. I'm a huge fan of animation shorts, but to be honest I really only know the cartoons that were made from the most well-known animators, and a few from lesser-known animators who were nominated for Oscars.. So this won't be an incredibly huge list..

"I Met The Walrus" (2007)
The audio is taken from a 1969 interview conducted by a 14-year-old Beatle fan who snuck into John Lennon's hotel room.


"Rejected" (2000)
In terms of cult-classic shorts, this is as good as it gets. (Youtube incorrectly labels this as an Oscar winner, although it was nominated.)


"Guard Dog" (2004)
A Bill Plympton short, deserving of a special award for cuteness.

"Broodwich" (2003)
You can probably tell at this point that our knowledge of animation shorts is not especially vast, since it's only short #5 and we're already reverting to clips from Adult Swim. However, we've always preferred actual ink and paper animation (or stop motion) as opposed to Pixar clips or ones that utilize CGI.. which is why clips such as Presto (the short that got played before Wall-E) will not qualify for this list.

In the case of the "Broodwich" episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force (a series which often utilizes computer effects), this deserves inclusion simply based on its darkness, and the abrupt ending.

"More" (1998) & "Hell Bent" (2001)
The 1998 stop-motion short "More" was given a different light in 2001 when the soundtrack was altered to instead include Kenna's then-unreleased new single "Hell Bent." The short was also edited differently in order to synch with the song. Aside from that whole White Stripes/Legos thing, this was probably the best animated music video of the decade.


"The Meaning Of Life" (2005)
Animation shorts built around comedy are normally our favorites. However, there seem to be many (often times those which are nominated for Oscars) which use cartoons or stop motion to express something darker, more thought-provoking, or more artistic. If there's a line between the comedy shorts and the more artistic shorts, "The Meaning Of Life" is probably the line itself. The Meaning Of Life has the ability to blow minds apart, and the seemingly simple pencil drawings actually become somewhat disturbing at parts, so brace yourself if you must. This is Don Hertzfeldt's 12-minute masterpiece, pieced together over the course of 5 years.

"Pattern Against User"

A similar theme from the Green Day post the other day..

This may be hard to believe, but there was a time - somewhere between 2000 and 2001 - when a statement like "This one's for our boys in Coldplay" wouldn't have sounded quite as lame preceding a live TV performance. This clip is the proof, partially because Coldplay's Parachutes has aged with far more grace than their subsequent yawnfests, and partially because at.the.drive.in are one of the most incredibly fucking amazingly powerful live acts of the past 10 years.

"Waiting"

In my last post, I started to mention a "10 TV performances," which I've decided will be unveiled soon, along with 2 separate "10 TV Moments" lists. They will probably be the only "decade end" things I'll post here, which I figured would be fun since they'll all come complete with video clips.

This clip of Green Day's "Waiting" doesn't exactly fall in the same category as "Forget The Swan," but is still noteworthy as it was probably Green Day's last TV performance from their classic era. At this point, it's a bit difficult to recall classic Green Day existing during this decade, but it did happen.
