100. Lil Nas X “Old Town Road” / Billie Eilish “Bad Guy”
We've been told that 2019 lists are meaningless boomer-fests without these two songs, so we tied them at #100. We've been waiting for the next MC Hammer for a while, and hey it finally happened. "Old Town Road" was the "U Can't Touch This" of 2019, and so that basically makes Billie Eilish the Sinead O'Connor of 2019; "Bad Guy" was her "Nothing Compares 2 U." "Panini" was basically "Pray" because it will be forgotten within 3 years even though it charted decently and scored some radio spins. (This is a stretch, but "Pray" and "Nothing Compares 2 U" share the Prince connection, while "Panini" and Eilish's aesthetic generated inadvertent Cobain comparisons.) To take it a step further, When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? was the I Do Not Want What I Haven't Got of 2019; both hit #1 for several weeks and received massive acclaim including Grammy recognition. Of course, this entails a strong contextual examination of label consolidation's affect on drastically shrunken rotation playlists and longevity of chart hits that don't receive radio spins; for example, "Bury A Friend" was a minor hit on modern rock stations, peaking at #26. Z100 didn't play it, nor did they play "The Emperor's New Clothes" back in 1990. Speaking of Grammys, "Old Town Road" and "U Can't Touch This" were both nominated for Record Of The Year. The main thread connecting all four artists is that they're all largely remembered for peaking with their immensely popular signature songs despite a multitude of false indications that these songs were about to spark much larger careers.

99. Tool “Pneuma”
I like to call this one "Me and the boys."

98. Otoboke Beaver “6 Day Working Week Is A Pain”

97. Palehound “Your Boyfriend’s Gun”

96. Zig Zags “Fallout”

95. 2 Player “Retro South”

94. Spice Boys “Dream Vendor” / Spice Boys f/ Boys “Think About You A Lot”

93. Slipknot “Unsainted”

92. Stephen Malkmus “Rushing The Acid Frat”
Close enough.

91. Saweetie “My Type” / Haroinfather f/ Savagegasp “Tunnel Of Love” / Willow "Wait A Minute"
It didn't take long for TikTok to start heading in the same direction as Facebook -- overtaken by moms and boomers and bad memes. But from January through August 2019, it almost felt like the second coming of Vine, combined with a new "alternative pop" radio format with several meme-ing hits that weren't really popular elsewhere. By the end of the year, "My Type" charted pretty well, but "Tunnel Of Love" never trended any higher than TikTok. The meme-ing deep cut from Willow's 2016 LP threw a serious curveball, although somehow not as leftfield as the slowed down Lana Del Rey cover. "Weird" as a brand could easily come back any time now.

90. Green Druid “The End of Men”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YCO01p95ado

89. Ex Hex “Rainbow Shiner”

88. Neil Young + Crazy Horse “Help Me Lose My Mind”

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xmZvAbFtnwg

87. Purple Mountains “Margaritas at the Mall”

86. Rammstein “Sex”

85. Alex G “Walk Away”

84. Denzel Curry f/ Rick Ross “Birdz”

83. Tropical Fuck Storm “Paradise”

82. Pendant “Through a Coil”

81. David Nance “Meanwhile”

Vid Kids 2015 #6: Run The Jewels featuring Zack de la Rocha "Close Your Eyes (And Count To Fuck)"

MTV once created a simpler gateway for young filmmakers to generate name-recognition in a way that doesn't seem to be catching quite as easily in the Youtube/Vimeo era. The 2010s doesn't really have any big "pop video director" names like Jonas Akerlund, F. Gary Gray, Mark Romanek or Hype Williams. Although, if this decade had one of those names, it would be AG Rojas. For us, his video for "Earl" by Earl Sweatshirt was like the 2010s version of Sam Bayer's "Teen Spirit" video, hitting at just the perfect time when the world of music and pop videos desperately needed the excitement that Odd Future happily provided.

Just the same, the state of the world at the beginning of 2015 needed a strong reaction. And it had been a very long time since world events properly aligned with a cultural movement that didn't feel self-serving or grossly heavy-handed. For example, 9/11, the invasion of Iraq and Hurricane Katrina were expected to coincide with strong cultural movements that never really happened. Reactions to those moments throughout the world of music frequently appeared very self-serving. U2 was somehow present for all of them. Sam Bayer - 14 years after "Teen Spirit" - reacted to Iraq with possibly the worst video of the 2000-2009 decade, Green Day's "Wake Me When September Ends."

2015. We're finally experiencing a cultural movement that can produce a video like THIS, equally moving and appropriately poignant. We don't wanna blow our load too soon before Hot Mix, so we'll cool down our reaction to the world at large. But yea, "Close Your Eyes" is one of the strongest reactions to this era from any medium.

Vid Kids 2015 #10: Mark Ronson featuring Mystikal "Feel Right"

I guess we'll go with this one for #10, even though we've seen videos like this one a few times before. The kid gets called a nerd, and then he overcomes the challenge to un-nerd himself. It's a feel good hit. (Also, we're bummed that we couldn't find room for this to place higher than #101 in Hot Mix 2014, so perhaps this will make up for our blunder.) Also for some reason, this made us miss 2002-era MTV2.

that dude with the weird eye

We are horrible. This guy has so much going for him. His romantic song "Trap Queen" totally went to #4. That means his song was the 4th biggest song in the United States not long ago. And yet, we are just really shitty scummy horrible people because we googled "what's the deal with that dude's weird eye?" Okay we actually didn't, but just imagine we did. But even if we did, it should matter more that his song went to #4. Not many artists with only one big hit can claim that they peaked at #4. We feel like "Paper Planes" probably peaked at #4. And after searching Wikipedia, it turns out that we remembered correctly. That's kinda pathetic, but not quite as pathetic as wondering about this dude's weird eye. We're very sorry. The song is what matters most. Not the eye. We also tagged "dirty south" for this post even though he's from New Jersey. We're fucking up a lot here.

stellaaauuuhh (2005)

"That time we interviewed Stella" was 10 years ago this month. I remember I got pretty sick that day (resulting in a few voice cracks), and it was kinda snowy and rainy outside. And due to being sick, I was less nervous than I could have been, considering that I was asking questions to my childhood heroes.

I remember that I was more or less obsessed with Howard Stern during that time, and his direct and uncompromising interviewing style influenced me to ask questions that I probably would not have considered asking today. This is mostly referring to a couple Q's from earlier in the interview when I asked whether they only appeared on I Love the '80s and other VH1 specials for the money or if it was something they actually enjoyed - a rude question in retrospect, but whatever. It happened. (Their answer was basically "both.")

I remember Eugene Mirman was the opening act, and that I could have easily asked him some stuff as well, but my co-host (who took some sweet photos and videos) and I were too tired and I was feeling crummy. (I recall watching Eugene and Stella's set from a table close to the exit on the side of the room far away from where everyone else was standing because I was too unwell to stand up for an hour straight. No big deal though, since this was probably my 5th time seeing Stella.) In retrospect, we probably should have collected our energy enough to ask Eugene some Q&A.

It seems kinda silly now, but this was def a huge checkpoint-type event. An early "achievement unlocked" moment from my 20s. Every Stella short that got posted was like a huge event in those days. After meeting them in person, most other celebrity encounters that I've had didn't seem as important.

(Although two weeks ago, I did sit on a couch next to Killer Mike, who is probably the most intimidating rock star I've ever seen up close. I said hello to El-P, but it was tough to get up the nerve to say hi to Mike. An hour or 2 later, their group Run The Jewels was attacked by a crazed fan who rushed their stage. And afterwards in the empty alley where Killer Mike was being ushered to his car I yelled out "Yo, fuck that dude! That guy sucks!" so at least I said something.)

upside down rappers

What's hot on the streets right now? NOT upside down rappers.

And why not exactly? We don't know why but we are advocating for its comeback in 2015.

Bring back the upside down rappers. Ludacris, get on this.

2000's Jams (+5): Outkast “Unhappy” (2003)

10 years on, Speakerboxxx still rules as the less tedious and equally sprawling half of this decade's answer to The White Album (for properly displaying which of Outkast's members were responsible for their individual components, showcasing a proper encore to their brilliant 3-album stretch between 1996 and 2000, and providing the 2000's with its most beloved double-album.)

Jams like "Ghettomusick," "The Rooster," "The Way You Move," "Knowing" and ESPECIALLY the hugely underrated deep cut "Reset" (with samples of shaken spray-paint cans) still sound just as fresh today, and present something far deeper than Andre's forays into "bizarre for the sake of bizarre." The Love Below was an exciting as fuck moment in time that hasn't aged nearly as well as Speakerboxxx, although we still attest to our initial assessment: Both halves need each other in order to form their proper ying-and-yang cohesion, an important factor in what makes its sprawl so fascinating.

There are several "keys" to unlocking the heart of this album, but "Unhappy" is among our most favorite, placed towards the album's beginning and setting a tone that's subdued and pensive, yet playful and just as inventive as the artistic heights of their 90's material.

And for fun, here's the "Ghettomusick" video:

"Hit Me"

We weren't planning on posting anything tonight, or at all anytime soon... "Hot Mix 2012" is still somewhat in limbo, although we might be able to start "videos of the year" within the next day or so, so at least there's that.... BUT WAIT A SEC...

STOP THE FUCKING PRESSES........ Mystikal is back???!

new jams! "She Said OK" and "Hot Cheetos & Takis"

The chorus on the new Big Boi............ You've gotta be kidding........

And then this thing..... we'd like to give a giant "hell yeah" to YN Rich Kids...

New Post: New Music "New Clothes, New Shoes"

More news about Pill from RapFix.Mtv.Com:

Two weeks ago the Atlanta MC hopped on Twitter and expressed his frustration with his label. Many believed that Pill’s tweets were aimed at Rick Ross and his Warner Bros. distributed-label, Maybach Music Group, but that isn’t exactly the case. Pill revealed to MTV News that he was never technically signed to MMG even though he was featured heavily on MMG’s Self Made Vol. 1. The rapper’s contract he says was directly with Warner. "I never signed any paperwork with Ross. It was just my deal was over at Warner already," Pill revealed to MTV News Tuesday.

So the full-length that we've been endlessly waiting on is due to legal/record label issues? LAME. He hasn't even released one LP yet. Save the drama for yo mama.

On the positive-side of things, a new Pill mixtape called The Epidemic is scheduled for release very soon.

In the meantime here's Pill's new video, showing the lonelier and more paranoid aspects of hustling:

DJ Scream & Pill "The Diagnosis" download

Pill's new mixtape dropped today at 3PM. The dumb website that hosts it forced me to set up a login and password for some reason.. And then I had to go through a bunch of stupid ads... It was frustrating..

So we're hosting it now. OK DEN?

http://www.mediafire.com/?6wj3mb7ctmra70l

Much like Pill's last mixtape, there's an absurdly depressing amount of DJ tags throughout, although they don't sound nearly as bad as on 1140: The Overdose (which ended up vastly improving a few months later when the tags were completely removed)... This is also Pill's first mixtape without a number in the title.

Best Music Videos Of 2009: #1 Pill "Trap Goin' Ham"

If MTV still existed (in its classic form), it's possible "Trap Goin' Ham" could do what "Nuthin' But A G Thing" did for west coast gangsta rap in 1993. This is true grit, with so many brilliantly rugged and real images. It's the genuine dirty south in its purest form. Apparently, this video was SO real, that at least one gentleman threatened the camera crew with a swinging florescent lightbulb. Craziest video shoot ever?

Best Music Videos Of 2009: #6 Plies "Becky"

Like the antithesis of Pill's "Trap Goin' Ham," this is a whole different story about street life in the Dirty South. I'd explain further, but I may just end up spoiling the fun.. LMAO X 111111110000000000000000000
