cab driver 1996 (top 20)

We actually enjoy a lot of these movies. Thanks S&E:

sooooooooooooooo tapped out.

"It's like meeting the girl of your dreams and then finding out she's five."

#20 Weezer "Tired Of Sex"

This fuckin guy Rivers. He's just a regular Don Johnson, isn't he? Whippin' off the towel every chance he gets. Matt Sharp & Pat Wilson achieve murderous tendencies throughout the final minute of this.

#19 Spacehog "In The Meantime"

"All The Young Dude Kids" Not inspired by the movie Kids, although some of the kids from that movie hang out in video and all of them are now probably singin' a tune to the name of 20 million dollars worth of death because they're dead.

#18 Local H "Bound For The Floor"

Scott Lucas and Joe D did the hot/cold peekaboo game with us when we were learning division tables on flashcards n shit. We looked up over the table and there they were with 45/3 ready to jam it.

#17 Dr. Octagon "Blue Flowers"

Kool Keith cut my place in line for license plates at the DMV, but it's ok. Later on we got 5 name changes all at once.

#16 Ginuwine "Pony"

Ginuwine is in that classification where you wer.e. Ginuwine's world tour requires TWO tourbuses. One for Ginuwine and one for his infinite throbbing boner, all snug and pleasant and comfy. He gets to play with teddy's and sleek salamanders searching for whatever it is that turns him on. Timbaland's burp noise is actually Timbo's dick waking up the mourning. He's pissed off and needs his coffee. "Mourning wood" can't get this man down.

#15 Weezer "I Just Threw Out The Love Of My Dreams"

Glancing often, 12 or 14 times within an hour-long period. This means equals mad DTF but all parties involved are just straight-up cleva. No words exchnaged. Try again tomorrow when lots of discovery at Bradlee's can make it alright. David Bowie's Earthling. I mean, it was there, it was right in my hand. I totally wasnt expecting to steal it but they just made it to easy for me. And then the next day in class i placed in on her desk without telling anyone who put it there. Driving away sad. (Editor's note: This never happened.)

#14 Outkast "Elevators"

slidin' up and dow. baritone saxophone section's part sounds a little silly, i dunno, maybe i'm out of my league here. (Editor's note: there's no bari sax in this song lol.)

#13 Modest Mouse "Whenever You Breathe Out I Breathe In"

Been having some breathing problems attacked to anxiousness; it makes me breathe deep. i've been tld that someone breathing in will harken the youth back into my lung. Haven't see you aroud not going to bed until flash carsd.lllll

#12 Local H "High Fivin' MF"

Massive unmovable guitar riff. "Riff of the year" and arguably of the decade and don't let the man get you down otherwise with any of that claptrap which might suggest Page & Plant or Eric Clapton Unplugged which can both suck the eggs out of the roosters cow wing.

#11 Aaliyah "If Your Girl Only Knew"

Untainted and pure. It slipped our minds that princess Aaliyah was once married to a man who appears in this list who sang about "keepin in the down low," and apparently he didn't because everyone knew about it. 'If Your Girl" is an understanding and unheralded subdued Timbo banger. Don't mess with the best.

#10 Cannibal Corpse "Devoured By Vermin"

No fear for George Corpsegrinder. He just took right over, in charger after Chris Barnes found better luck in Sex Feet Under. This should have been #1 We fucked up. Top 10 isn't bad though..

#9 Ghostface Killah "Winter Warz"

Drivin' up with Dad. Cappadonna comes up and son starts wondering about the meaning of it all. Dad made a wrong turn and stopped short to turn around. No matter to him.

#8 Failure "Smoking Umbrellas"

Yes, Doorknob was glowing. I was there, I saw it. It as great.

#7 Beck "Jack-Ass"

Havin some trouble finding the Youtube video with Willie Nelson. It's one of our favorite videos, but unfortunately not included on Beck's account. "Lose ends tying a noose in the back of my mind."

#6 Weezer "Falling For You"

Moments in life sometimes can feel as extreme as this song suggests, those extremities are often soaked in hope and nervousness and uncertainty. Just about to start learning about someone who might be amazing and the enormity of that moment. "I'm shaking at your touch." God, that bridge, and the outro. Starting to doubt self-worth the instant she doesn't immediately respond to a text or email. It's the end of the fucking world.

#5 Mark Morrison "Return Of The Mack"

Optimism is large tonight. This dude's head is slightly enormous. The Mack is the guy who busts down the double-doors and walks into the bar like "yeah, fuck you," and he's the hypothetical awesomest guy ever, and nothing can bring this guy down, so don't even fucking try. The heartache is still persistent, and sometimes he requires a scream of "OH MY GOD."

#4 Radiohead "Exit Music (For A Film)"

This very obscure hidden gem plays during the credits after Leo and Claire Danes do themselves in. Months later it was thrown in the middle of some weird album that no one's ever heard. (This is not cheating. YOURE cheating.)

#3 Jay-Z and Notorious B.I.G. "Brooklyn's Finest"

"If Faye have twins, she'd probably have two Pacs. Get it? Tupac's?" Ignore the lame Scarface intro, obviously. By the time we're 45 seconds in, Jay and Big Smalls unlocked their first trade-off. This song had no ambition of receiving radio airplay but turned into a classic of the era anyway, despite the fecal-pants chorus inspiring a young Nicki Minaj 14 years later with "Did It On 'Em."

#2 Ghost Town DJ's "My Boo"

First time around: There's definitely something distinctively "classic 90's" about a song whose drums are encouraging grind-dancing, but whose innocent lyrics, playful keyboards, and simplistic vocal melody paint images of 7th graders dreaming about their crushes while they're supposed to be workin' on their studies. Two years later we like it even better. We're actually straight up bummed we considered it a guilty pleasure as opposed to a straight up 90s jam.

#1 Aaliyah "One In A Million"

The greatest jam of all time. What more can really be said about it? Her particular style of "teen-girl subtly hinting at promiscuity" predates everyone else, albeit much more tastefully than what followed. With this song, Missy & Timbo kicked off their trippy futuristic sci-fi party. "One In A Million" is a perfect jam for the stars...

tiny classified ads 1996

We probably knew that Don Lapre killed himself about 1 year ago. But we probably forgot. His infomercial lives on, some of which we still have memorized:

The following portion of "Sick Mix '96" has been funded by weekly checks, every single week.

#35 Charles Bronson "Let's Start A Revolution So I Can Go Break Some Shit"

It's the 3rd song on this. I'll show you what, youth. They only wanted to sing.

#34 Jay-Z "Dead Presidents"

Tragedy today, as former President Gerald Ford was eaten by wolves. He was delicious.

#33 Failure "Blank"

Downtune the high-E to a D and you're good to go.

#32 Stereolab "The Noise Of Carpet"

The noise of mark.

#31 Sloan "The Good In Everyone"

The intro of the video is as long as the song which has an intro longer than the "song" part of the song.

#30 Elliott Smith "Angeles"

16 months later, Elliott was opening for Celine Dion on live television. How do these things happen?

#29 Chavez "Flight '96"

Bottle rocket flight?

#28 Weezer "El Scorcho"

weerez (WEER-ez) n. A variation on the name of alternative rock band "weezer." Originally seen in the "El Scorcho" music video. "Dude, I totally got some pussy at the weerez concert." http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=weerez

#27 Nada Surf "Icebox"

Bury me in sorrow, Johnny Football-hero.

#26 Junior Mafia "Get Money"

Disrespect my click, my shit's imperial.

#25 Aphex Twin "Girl/Boy Song"

G-G-G-G-G-G-G-G-GGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGggggggggggggg (these are some of the lyrics to "Girl/Boy Song"... or at least that's what we sang/screamed the first time we heard it)

#24 Beck "Where It's At"

That was a good drum break! We forgot how awesome this video is.

#23 764-Hero "Obviously Awful"

Obscure B-Side... hasn't made it onto Youtube just yet. (Fuck.) Here's the A-Side, which should've been in this list anyway. But it's no "Obviously Awful."

#22 Dr. Octagon "I'm Destructive"

Smearing green lightning bugs. Copulating having sex. Tickets for Van Halen.

#21 Smashing Pumpkins "Mouths Of Babes"

Video doesn't have the whole song. :( Perhaps unnecessary band-movie-novel connections will make up for this: In 1996, Fountains Of Wayne toured with Smashing Pumpkins, not long after contributing the song "That Thing You Do" to the movie of the same name, which Tom Hanks wrote and directed, who also acted with recently deceased actor Michael Clarke Duncan in The Green Mile which was a book originally written by Stephen King in 1996, which was the year Smashing Pumpkins released "Mouths Of Babes" on the Zero EP. Full circle.

90's Rock Feuds

Some good pictures were included with this article, which is like 89% of the reason we're linking to it...

As usual, some liberties have been taken regarding "90s revisionism," for example one of the "feuds" listed here is "Nirvana vs Pearl Jam," which was hardly a feud compared to anything else listed here. Changing this to "Nirvana vs GNR" would have made much more sense.

We also don't agree with their choice of "Britney vs Christina," only because once again, this was hardly a feud... They were pretty much always painted by the media as comrades along the lines of say, the Beatles and the Stones for example... Competitive friends, but never a pair who were publicly feuding. (Not to mention, this did not take place at any point during the actual duration of the 90's.)

Nor do we agree with their word choice of "Epic" to describe anything 90's-related.. But once again, this is mostly worth checking out for a few decent pictures...

90's Jams (Bonus): Biggie Smalls "Party And Bullshit" (1993)

And here it is... The final 90's Jam. It's been quite a run these past- ... 10 months? Damn, where did the time go.. And I hope no one is groaning too much that we're closing things out with yet ANOTHER Notorious jam... But not just any. It's (probably) Andrew WK's favorite Notorious jam, and that's gotta count for something. And plus, this was back when he was still going by "Biggie Smalls." Honestly, it was either gonna be this or "Gin & Juice" which I don't know if I can handle for the 500th time right now... At the time of "Party's" release, "Gin & Juice" was arguably the biggest hiphop jam of that year, while Biggie was quietly plotting in the shadows, ready to put an end to West Coast's short-lived reign... "Smokin' blunts was a daily routine since thirteen, a chubby nigga on the scene..."

90's Jams #4: The Notorious B.I.G. "Gimme The Loot" (1994)

In probably his most intimidating and rawest performance, here lies the proof that Big Smalls was hiphop's most convincing and greatest storyteller.. (Nothing that happens in this song is true.) And probably the best song for tricking people into believing that he collaborated with ODB... Turns out Biggie & Puff Daddy thought up the brilliant idea of trying to make the same voice sound like a gang of rappers, since #1 the intensity of the rhymes calls for some lyrical overlap, and #2 Have you ever actually tried rapping along to this song with the same vocal inflection and pitch? You WILL run out of breath... It's like running a fucking marathon.. Although that doesn't stop people from trying (Artie Lange did an ok job).. While "Juicy" is the jam that permanently placed his name in the history books, "Gimme The Loot" is the kind of stuff that can turn someone from "amazing" to "legendary.."

90's Jams #11: The Notorious B.I.G. "Hypnotize" (1997)

Shifting paradigms. In early 1997, "Hypnotize" set the tone for hiphop's next big change, visually evident in the absurdly extravagant MTV videos of directors F. Gary Gray, Hype Williams, and "Hypnotize" director Paul Hunter. By that point, rap was pop - clearly here to stay - so emphasizing street rawness was no longer necessary. By the end of the year, even Wu-Tang Forever reflected some gleam and sheen. Puff Daddy's eletro-bass sample from Herp Alpert's "Rise" resonated as audacious and forward thinking (and resonated entire apartment buildings when played at the appropriate volume), not to mention the perfect backing track for the cool and confident Biggie Smalls: "Poppa been smooth since days of Underroos..." "I still leave you on the pavement / Condo paid for, no car payment / At my arraignment, note for the plantiff / Your daughter's tied up in a Brooklyn basement..." Champagne, jet-boats, Ray-bans, and surrounded by bitches with the titties hangin' out... The man went out on top. (And that's not all he was on top of...)

90s Jams #55: The Notorious B.I.G. "Juicy" (1994)

Although he often dipped into more hardcore subject matter, 2Pac ultimately became best known for his "inspirational" tracks ("Dear Mama," "Changes," "Keep Ya Head Up," etc, etc...). As mentioned in the "Mo Money Mo Problems" entry, Biggie's albums portrayed a broad spectrum of textures and emotions, far more so than 2Pac. But the "inspirational" elements of "Juicy" are probably what ended up linking Biggie to 2Pac more than his other singles. Almost every lyric of this song is considered among hiphop's most legendary: The urgent nature of "Super Nintendo Sega Genesis;" the comparison of his immense popularity to the bombing of the World Trade Center; and of course, "Birthdays was the worst dayys/Now we sip champagne when we're thirstayy.."

If you'd like to read more about "Juicy," might I NOT suggest the immensely bloated and absurd "synopsis" currently detailed in its wikipedia entry. I guarantee you there isn't a single living person who gained any hint of knowledge from this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Juicy_%28The_Notorious_B.I.G._song%29

90s Jams #69: The Notorious B.I.G. "Mo Money Mo Problems" (1997)

Biggy projected a wide range on both of his official albums. The dark tracks were fucking DARK (like "Suicidal Thoughts"), but when Biggy sang about "Party And Bullshit," it was nothing short of Andrew WK screaming "Party Til You Puke" into a distorted microphone. "Mo Money Mo Problems" was the party anthem Biggy was meant to deliver, and the one that finally made him the biggest MC in the world (albeit posthumously). It's still played on Top 40 stations for a reason.. Along with what now is certainly known as the most popular production beat Puff Daddy ever laid to tape, both he and Ma$e wisely avoided embarrassment by playing it cool and laying low, allowing Big's monster final verse to carry this one into the stratosphere.

WTF this video is classic as shit, and yet there are ZERO decent quality uploads of this on Youtube???? Shit is wack...

90s Jams #81: The Notorious B.I.G. "Everyday Struggle" (1994)

The album that reinvented East Coast rap for the gangsta age, Ready to Die made the Notorious B.I.G. a star, and vaulted Sean "Puffy" Combs' Bad Boy label into the spotlight as well. Today it's recognized as one of the greatest hardcore rap albums ever recorded, and that's mostly due to Biggie's skill as a storyteller. His raps are easy to understand, but his skills are hardly lacking -- he has a loose, easy flow and a talent for piling multiple rhymes on top of one another in quick succession. He's blessed with a flair for the dramatic, and slips in and out of different contradictory characters with ease. Yet, no matter how much he heightens things for effect, it's always easy to see elements of Biggie in his narrators and of his own experience in the details; everything is firmly rooted in reality, but plays like scenes from a movie. - Allmusic http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:3ifpxqwhldfe
