MTVZ's Top 100 Videos of 2023 Countdown

Hey the new MTVZ is here. Please leave it on.

We had a Top 100 videos of the year list ready to post along with this but then the order got mixed up and we added like 20 more videos and then added some 80s videos so just pretend.

Note: We haven't seen a lot of these before. Lots of educated guesses. (For stuff like this, MTVZ likes to guess "what would the programmers of classic MTV put as their top 100 of the year if these just happened to come out in 1987-2002" or something.)

Okay we'll type out the first few until we get bored:

1. NewJeans - Super Shy

Wazzup Beijing. There's a new issue of MTVZ for June 2022.

The newest edition of MTVZ has arrived, and we want you all to enjoy it now, today.

*****In our first hour, we have the latest videos from Future, Milly, Momma, Nilufer Yanya, Horsegirl, Pet Fox, and Alex G, plus classics from Unsane, Fu Manchu, Braniac, some live Gish-era Smashing Pumpkins, and also we got the fresh new Viper remix in there. ****

Curated with love. If you don't watch, it means you hate me. Watch it, and then tell your friends. Have a party and leave it on. Do not fuck this up.

The Youtube app on Roku has added a whole buncha bullshit that has made MTVZ streaming a lot more fucking annoying. For example, there's a lot more ads, which is fine I guess.

But nothing is as bad as the "Continue watching?" button that pops up about once per hour, freezing the video until the button is entered. Which entirely defeats the purpose of MTVZ. (The purpose is "Leave It On" -- a tagline that we made up that we felt pretty accurately describes its purpose. It's intended for passive viewing.

Spotify claims to have cornered the market on passive content consumption, but Youtube seems to be pretty anti-passive consumption because they want to make sure people are watching all of their ads. Not only is it fucking bullshit, but it has entirely ruined MTVZ for everyone. We sorely miss the days when we could "leave it on" and then head out for a bike ride and return 2 hours later to see some fucking weird random shit on the TV. Or falling asleep to an especially long 300 video playlist and then waking up the next morning and not quite understanding what we're seeing. It's great. Or at least it was great. But now it's over. It's no more. It's dead now.

There is one huge exception -- an option for those who want to continue watching. If you currently spending $12/month on Youtube Premium, you will not see the "Continue Watching?" interruptions, nor will you receive any 4 minute ads (or 15 second ads, or any ads).

For normal free Youtube users, we did figure out "one weird trick" that sometimes works: When you let a few longer ads just play out all the way through, it often will reduce the frequency and length of ad content that shows up later in the playlist, which does alleviate some frustration.)

Imagine publicly complaining over and over about the bad ethics of Spotify and then not encouraging people to enjoy other playlisting alternatives. Just imagine it, but then don't be that guy. Don't be that piece of shit.

Hope you all enjoy it!

The "Lost" Dec 2020 Edition Of MTVZ Is Very Merry And Cheery

It once was lost but now is found. Previous December editions of MTVZ were also merry and cheery, but not like this. You need to see it to believe it, people.

Update: Decade Canon Playlist, Spotify Rant, and November's MTVZ

We purposely kept the decade list as the top post for over 100 days in hopes that anyone would see it. We think a few people did, so that's good. Please share if you can!

We also made a playlist with all the streamable songs. Please follow!

Everyone hates Spotify now which is good. Despite its inherent evil, we will continue using Spotify because we use it the right way, which is sadly uncommon in 2020. We're pretty sure that 99% of current Spotify users do not use it in tandem with paid Bandcamp purchases, radio programming support, blogging support, vinyl and merch purchases, and (when it's not considered dangerous) paid show attendance.

We can proudly say that we assist some artists and labels through a multitude of support methods. We hope any of it has been helpful for the fans or artists. And so we still get to sleep at night, even though we use Spotify a lot, whereas the ugly asshole CEO of Spotify should be ashamed of himself for allowing such a horrendously flawed method of artist payout.

We weren't aware of this until 2 days ago, but Spotify's artist payout is allocated directly out of a fraction of their overall profit. A total dollar amount for all streams combined is determined by Spotify before they even begin looking at how many streams they accumulated. Payout actually has nothing to do with "per stream." It's determined by whatever amount Spotify is willing to hand out from their quarterly profits.

More info on this and other fun facts about Spotify were discussed on The Interdependence's recent Q&A with Joey and Mary from Downtown Boys.

So let's just say hypothetically, if one song on Spotify generated 50 billion streams, and if every other song on Spotify generated another 50 billion streams combined, then 50% of all of the artist payout would go towards one song, and all of the other songs on Spotify would split 50% based on the percentage they generated. In this hypothetical scenario, a very popular song or songs essentially wreck the payout curve. It's kinda similar to a teacher grading on a curve -- if the highest grade in the class was 75%, then anyone who got that 75% would get an A. But if a couple kids got 100%, it ruins the curve for everyone else.

And the best part: Meanwhile, the tech overlords get to continue building upon their empire, expanding their thinktank, pocketing the majority of their earnings, and keeping payouts far away from artists and actual content creators -- except for the 3 major labels, of course, who are totally on board with all of this.

Remember the Grammy Awards throughout the 2000s? Once a year, the asshole president of the recording academy would take up at least 5 minutes of air-time mid-way through the Grammy Awards to warn about the "dangers" of "stealing music" through file sharing, citing a lack of support for artists. As it turns out, this guy was 100% full of shit. Spotify seemed initially intended to remedy the inconvenience of file storage, but it actually solved the problem of how to ensure that billionaires continue getting rich from artististic works that they did not create themselves.

Yes, it's fucked. But there's good news. The good news is: if you're a music fan who regularly supports artists through a multitude of support methods, then you are not part of the problem!

We wish we could claim that MTVZ supports artists in any way. Perhaps one day, some influencer will discover and share MTVZ, helping it to flourish into the new standard for the modern era of TV programming and music exposure.

Apparently there are a handful of cool people on Youtube who fuck with MTVZ, and we thank every one of you for justifying our meager existance.

There's a newer one of these floating around somewhere, but in the meantime here is November's MTVZ:

The August 2020 Edition of MTVZ with Froggo And Da Crew on the cover

Still a work in progress as usual but get an early look before 4 other people see it.

The May 2020 Edition of MTVZ with Duck.exe on the cover

MTVZ Issue #23 or #24. We lost count.

The latest edition of MTVZ is here. We are suspecting that this is right around "the big moment" we've been waiting for, which is that we have successfully located everything in the history of Youtube that is worth including in MTVZ. Like we're almost there anyway.

But we also think that when it gets close to "yeah that's it, we found everything" is also around the time when MTVZ will start to get really bizarre, which is what has happened here. This isn't necessarily "the best" MTVZ of all time but it is very strange, even for MTVZ.

Scroll through and you'll see what we mean.

Also NEW NEWS FOR MTVZ Subscribers:

So for some fucking dumb reason, Google and Youtube decided it would be a brilliant idea to add a feature that asks "ARE YOU STILL WATCHING?" about once per hour. This is extremely dumb and bad because it defeats the purpose of MTVZ, whose tagline is "MTVZ: Leave It On." So we can no longer "LEAVE IT ON" for longer than an hour without having to physically pick up the remote and hit the "YES" button (at least not while leaving it on with Roku or Firestick or Chromecast or whatever you use).

It's almost as if Youtube and Google know that people are taking matters into their own hands by curating their own personal "best of"s which is something that Big Tech hates.

Big Tech hates when their human/robot curation machine cannot entirely control what you see. They want you to only see the "next" video in their cue, algorithmically programmed by their Most Googly -- people who probably think Meme Appetit is funny. (Btw Meme Appetit is one of the thousands of recently launched painfully unfunny meme accounts set up by people trying to make money by creating memes who don't seem to have a basic understanding of why memes "meme." Bon Appetite Test Kitchen people are all very nice and cool and they deserve better than this.)

New MTVZ (April 2020 edition) and possible return to daily posts

Are we back? We might be back.

We wish more people would blog. It's true that blogging is very 15 years ago, whereas the mini-blogging convenience of Twitter and long-posting on Facebook to everyone you've ever met in your life are the hottest shit-sessions of the moment. It's beyond "everyone has a voice." These voices -- which are now literally everyone's voice -- demand loud, long takes on literally every topic, until the overwhelming density of output accumulates to such a degree that it no longer constitutes as meaningful content. Unfiltered news feeds have grown to colossal static noise, gigantic enough that one unverified un-checked voice no longer matters. Why add to the noise? No matter how much thought goes into one little 140 character post, it's a fallen tree lost in the midst of an infinitely vast forest that only a limited few might hear or see or remember.

Quarantine logically should get more eyes on a wider public discourse, but it's also increased the output of noise to an unprecedented degree. The blue checkmarks clearly are incapable of any little people stealing their thunder, which is why we now get influencer dummies flashing their tits on Twitter. A couple weeks back, it felt like influencers and the 1% finally didn't matter. And then "Imagine" happened. What a bunch of fucking losers. We tried our best to ignore Natalie Portman jumping the shark as much as possible, but she sucks. Fuck Hollywood. Rich people should be ashamed of themselves. It's time to promote "rich shaming." Fuck them all. If 9/11 couldn't kill decadence, the current global disaster might get the job done nicely, refocusing the world as a whole on things that actually matter for a change. A lot of us will emerge from the rubble in a far more financially vulnerable position, more enraged by Cribs-style flaunts of luxury than ever before. We were already enraged by the celebration of materialism throughout the mid-2000s, and it turns out we were right all along. How about that?

There was a plan to end this blog sometime around 2020 or 2021. In the meantime, we might return to daily posts for the remainder of the quarantine. We have a lot to discuss, and none of it is meaningful, but it's all longer than what we care to express on the socials to everyone we've ever met.

We also planned on continuing MTVZ until around now, early 2020. We figured there's only so much noteworthy Youtube content. But we keep finding stuff! At this rate, we'll probably have another one of these ready by late April.

And try to contain yourself while sneaking a peek at the May 2020 edition:

NEW DECADE == NEW MTVZ

You're crazy for this one.

Hugh Downs' and Barbara Walters' favorite year is here.

The new MTVZ has all 100 from MTVZ's 2019 Video Countdown (starting with #1 and working up from there) along with many longer and stranger bumpers. We tried to close it with that creepy stop-motion Alice In Wonderland movie from the late 80s but Youtube immediately removed it for whatever reason.

MTVZ (August 2019)

Back to school is just around the corner. Where's MTVZ? Here it is.

MTVZ June 2019 Is Hotter Than July

We've been slacking on the most obvious shit, which is content that is already good and ready to post here, like the most recent MTVZ which we've heard a lot of people raving as "not as good as the last one but still good."

We've noticed that the most recent YouTube update (for Chromecast or FireStick or other streaming devices) has fixed the flow of the videos so that it actually kinda looks like you're watching real TV now. We feel like most people just want to cherry pick the stuff they like from the playlist, which is also fine. But in case you just want some dope background noise while vacuuming, or if you need something to leave on while no one else is in the house to repel prowlers, MTVZ June 2019 is a better choice than Netflix or Hulu because there's no algorithm determining the next thing to play after another video is finished. Instead, the next video was determined by us. And it will not eventually lead to Gangnam Style. MTVZ is "the hottest jam out there." It's a fact.

Let's find out how Stevie Wonder feels about MTVZ.

Oh nice, Stevie Wonder says it's Hotter Than July. We are officially Stevie approved, even though he doesn't want to actually watch it because he is blind.

Holiday Content and the new MTVZ

Hi there. If you're looking for some holiday content while driving or washing the dishes, why not try the Dime Store Hegemon Radio Hour's 2-part Holiday extravaganza? Over the past two Wednesdays, the show has been kicking ass in Anckorage, Alaska pumping out the wintery jams and bringing you what you need.

We all heard a very good Hanukkah (sp?) song by Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings on the "Part 1" episode the other day. Did not hear the "Part 2" yet but it's probably somehow even better than the 1st one. Also, the Late Night Noise holiday show (the one more closely affiliated with this website) was not posted yet, so just listen to Dave's show because it was better. The shows are posted below.

Also posted below is the most recent edition of MTVZ which somehow has been viewed over 150 times and we're not sure how that happened. It also includes lots of holiday content.

MTVZ (Summer 2018)

And we're back!!!

We just wanted to make sure everyone who checks out the TMK blog is aware that TWO new editions of MTVZ were posted this past summer. That should be enough to keep everyone up to date with a generous fill of MTVZ. A new fresh edition will be arriving in late November or early December.

Here is the most recent MTVZ from September...

And here is an earlier one from July...

It's MTVZ's Top 100 Of 2017 Video Countdown

Countin' em down-- All the way down-- from 100 all the way to the number 1 video of the year:
It's MTVZ's Top 100 Video Count-Down of 2017.

Hello and welcome to MTVZ's Top 100 of 2017 video countdown. The playlist below includes the 100 greatest music videos of the year as chosen by the staff of MTVZ and this here blog.

The abbreviation MTVZ stands for My Tasty VidZ. The channel started because we wanted to pretend that MTV and MTV2 were no longer abysmal. Back when MTV was ok, they would typically celebrate the new year with a countdown of their top 100 videos of the year on New Years Eve with an encore presentation on New Years Day. The videos here do not represent TMK's best videos of the year; those were already posted over the past week. And this list does not represent our official best songs of the year, which will be posted when Fire Mix 2017 gets posted (probably over the next 2 weeks).

We're trying this out as an experiment hypothetically considering what MTV might have chosen if they still cared about literally anything (besides pressure from investors), strongly filtering out most of what we personally tag as "bullshit music." (Ed Sheeran is notably absent. Paramore placed strongly because they're a very popular band among our friends and are not egregiously awful, but they will likely not appear on Fire Mix 2017. "Africa" by Toto places at #12 despite that it's a video from 1983.) The selection process is too bizarre and boring and complicated to quickly explain.

Also, this will function as MTVZ's official playlist for January 2018 (even though more than half of this playlist appears in previous editions of MTVZ).

Note: MTVZ playlists tend to front-load, and so the videos are shown in ascending order as opposed to counting down.
