As we get used to blogger/blogspot's new format, we've discovered our new favorite part of this upgrade: Blogger Stats. Thanks to this handy feature, we now understand more about trends and random Googlers finding their way to some unexpected areas of this website. And with assistance from blogger stats, the 5 most important "Taste My Kids" moments of all time have been revealed...........
We actually got excited for a second, at the idea that maybe, just possibly, people actually thought one of our best posts ever was actually interesting or funny. But instead, google stats reveal the large amount of pageviews for "The Worst Songs of 2010" is mostly from people who wanted to see Weezey/Bieb and not because people enjoyed anything we had to say. (Also cracks are beginning to form in our archives as many of the pictures we lazily embedded have been taken down.. Also, Soundcloud changed their embed formatting recently, so both "2010's Greatest Hits" and "Hot Mix 2011" look a lot more awkward and ugly than they did a few months ago...)
Two weeks ago the Atlanta MC hopped on Twitter and expressed his frustration with his label. Many believed that Pill’s tweets were aimed at Rick Ross and his Warner Bros. distributed-label, Maybach Music Group, but that isn’t exactly the case. Pill revealed to MTV News that he was never technically signed to MMG even though he was featured heavily on MMG’s Self Made Vol. 1. The rapper’s contract he says was directly with Warner. "I never signed any paperwork with Ross. It was just my deal was over at Warner already," Pill revealed to MTV News Tuesday.
So the full-length that we've been endlessly waiting on is due to legal/record label issues? LAME. He hasn't even released one LP yet. Save the drama for yo mama.
On the positive-side of things, a new Pill mixtape called The Epidemic is scheduled for release very soon.
In the meantime here's Pill's new video, showing the lonelier and more paranoid aspects of hustling:
Something's starting to suggest that completing this will totally suck...
We'll be doing our best to post Soundcloud and Youtube links. And for the super-cool humans, we started a sick Spotify playlist in case anyone wants to listen along as we unveil the results: "Hot Mix 2011" On Spotify
100 LMFAO “Sexy And I Know It” Our favorite uncle-nephew team of 2011 somehow seem less awkward singing about their alleged "sexiness" than the two unforgivingly homosexual men in Right Said Fred did (exactly) 20 years ago, probably because LMFAO's message is far more inclusive, instead of specifically targeting "gay." Partying knows no sexuality. Fun doesn't know what gender it is. Fun just parties. Everybody party. NOW.
99 Crash of Rhinos “Closure”
We'll get more into this as the mix continues, but "Emo" (and emo-nostalgia) started making an unexpected comeback this year. From the more hardcore end, Crash of Rhinos (probably from Europe) got our attention with the brutal Distal LP...
98 Earl Sweatshirt “Dat Ass” We know they have many releases planned for 2012, but we're still disappointed in Odd Future, mostly because of the rapid-fire series of (mostly amazing) mixtapes from 2010, followed by like TWO in 2011. (Re-releasing the MellowHype LP on Fat Possum sans the Earl Sweatshirt track doesn't count.) Hope: In two months Earl will be turning 18, so we're guessing the sudden slowness of their release schedule may be awaiting his return as part of their 2012 takeover.
97 Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera “Moves Like Jagger” / Maroon 5 “Never Gonna Leave This Bed” Yo, fuck whistling. No one likes whistling, unless you're an asshole. (This is probably not true.) Also, we're still not sure if Xtina Aguilera's sweet ass actually appeared in "Moves Like Jagger" but she's probably in there somewhere. Both songs feature sick hooks that hang low like yo momma's titties. Fun Fact about Maroon 5: Their drummer sucks, so when they were recording their first LP, the producer was forced to call in Matt Chamberlain, the same guy who completely owned on Fiona Apple's When The Pawn LP. More Fun Facts: Taste My Kids' special ops team has obtained solid confirmation regarding mass suicides directly linked to that fucking godawful Gym Class Heroes song featuring Adam Levine or whatever that asshole's name is, and we are demanding an immediate cease-and-desist for future radio airplay. Accordingly, several #OccupyWallStreet protesters have planned to raise awareness of this issue in future demonstrations.
96 Radiohead “Bloom” A long time ago, SPIN outrageously claimed that TLC was inspired to write "Creep" partially because of the Radiohead single of the same name. While this is more than likely untrue, the "Rappers sampling Radiohead" trend didn't truly sprout until 2007 when CRS's "Us Placers" sampled "The Eraser," and the trend expanded even farther in 2011. It's only a matter of time before one of these actually scores a huge hit for some new-school rap dude. The band seems to be encouraging this, especially after their IDM-leanings became more obvious than ever on The King Of Limbs, without question "The most underrated LP of 2011." Colin Greenwood's bass continues its "secret weapon" status, and we wish we could say the same for Thom Yorke's ever-increasingly obscured vocals. As much as we enjoyed TKOL (accurately rated by P4k as a 7.9), we long for the days when we could actually "sing along" to Radiohead and remember how the words go... Ironically, Thom was a far better vocalist when he was unsure of himself and lacking confidence.
95 Big Talk “Getaways”
The Killers' outstanding mid-decade run of singles appears to have subsided. For whatever reason, the drummer dude who looks like In Utero-era Krist Novoselic released a decent LP on his own, mostly comprised of songs that sound exactly like The Killers. The "Replica" video weirded us out, but "Getaways" is still the standout...
94 Pill “Ridin’ On Dat Pole”
The mainstream rap game turned a new avenue late last year around the time of "Black and Yellow," "No Hands" and this new Maybach Music thing with Rick Ross behind the controls. We've been waiting on Pill's first official full-length for over two years now. "Still takin' my time," he says. We didn't realize this would turn into another Chinese Democracy."Ridin' On Dat Pole" seems directly influenced by MM's new direction, indicating what may be in store if Pill's takeover actually happens in 2012. Fingers crossed.
93 The Horrors “Endless Blue”
Our previous perception of The Horrors as a jokier tongue-in-cheek "goth" thing didn't sit well with us, but that changed after hearing their new direction on Skying, which surprisingly includes LOTS of hidden gems. "Endless Blue" really starts to take off about 90-seconds in... Wait for it........
92 Wild Flag “Electric Band”
Ass kicking 90's indie-rock gods from Helium and Sleater-Kinney formed like Voltron and spawned Wild Flag. We were among those who were sorely missing the presence of both bands within the rock-music spectrum, so a combination of these two were hugely welcomed. Had this mix been expanded to 200 songs, at least half of this LP would have placed.
91 Slices “Modern Bride”
We don't know a whole lot about the loud awesome punk rock in Slices, but their album art is among our favorite of 2011 simply because we were convinced that the window reflection was actually behind us, and then we turned around and it totally wasn't there.
Pill's new mixtape dropped today at 3PM. The dumb website that hosts it forced me to set up a login and password for some reason.. And then I had to go through a bunch of stupid ads... It was frustrating..
Much like Pill's last mixtape, there's an absurdly depressing amount of DJ tags throughout, although they don't sound nearly as bad as on 1140: The Overdose (which ended up vastly improving a few months later when the tags were completely removed)... This is also Pill's first mixtape without a number in the title.
Can't ring in the New Year without throwing up a few more pages of this shit.. Who's ready for some fuckin JAMZ?
50 Liars “Scarecrows On A Killer Slant” Liars are the only modern band I can think of who reference both Can and The Jesus Lizard on nearly every release, any yet every album is so different. They're also like the David Lynch of rock, in that their songs are often the types that would probably be playing at some crazy warped concert in someone’s dream. How can you tell if you're dreaming or not? Are you dreaming right now? Wake the fuck up and turn this shit up LOUD.
49 Happy Birthday “2 Shy”
Tortured bedroom confinement tears. Evan Dando, J Mascis, Teenage Fanclub, Sloan and Sebadoh finally have some real modern contemporaries instead of more severed hearts pushing 50. As Dando would sing, “it’s about time.”
48 California Swag District “Teach Me How To Dougie” ’06 had Chicken Noodle Soup. ’07 had Soulja Boy. ’09 was all about jerkin. But ’10 was The Year Of Dougie. And I personally know zero people who can accurately perform any of these dances. That’s how white I am, people. P.S. Did you know the drums in this song are fucking ridiculous? P.P.S. Here's one of those rare jams with something to look forward to in both the dirty AND clean versions.. Dirty starts out with "You know why? Cuz all the bitches love me," while the Clean (posted below) has "errbody love me err errbody love me" in the chorus. It's WIN/WIN with Dougie.
47 Vampire Weekend “Giving Up The Gun”
White people lol. Yo, these dudes got REAL fuckin paid this year. Has anyone else been in more car commercials than VW? Fuck, just read those initials! It’s almost as if they knew.... More hot drums, btw.
46 Of Montreal feat. Solange Knowles “Sex Karma” Some truth regarding Of Montreal:
#1 Kevin Barnes has now developed his knack of combining super-white with super-groovy to the point where inserting occasional “street terms” hasn’t yet become totally embarrassing, although the gratuitous use of “playa” in “Sex Karma” is really pushing it.
#2 “The Past Is A Grotesque Animal” is without question one of the 10 most overrated songs of the past decade. Sorry kids; we only speak truth here.
#3 Their 2005 LP The Sunlandic Twins has remained their unheralded masterpiece which has yet to be topped in terms of dancable, syrupy, mellodramatic radiance, although an album full of “Sex Karma’s” would get the job done nicely. It’s probably their best song since “Voltaic Crusher/Undrum To Muted Da.”
45 Drake “Find Your Love”
“Find Your Love” is all about its subtleties, which have far more to do with Kanye than Drake, such as that keyboard ring after the 2nd chorus, sounding oddly nostalgic for late-80’s pop. Is it Janet Jackson or INXS or something? Fuck, it sounds so good that it hardly matters where it was stolen from.
44 Weezer “Getting Up And Leaving” I’d have to guess this is probably the first time since at least 2002 that a single Weezer track appeared in the top 100, let alone three tracks, all of which were (unsurprisingly) recorded between 1995 and 1998.
Throughout the early 2000’s, the most coveted of Weezer’s unreleased “holy grail” of 90’s demos was “Lullaby For Wayne,” finally uncovered after years of patience in the form of a live video on their 2002 DVD, and then later in studio form on 2004’s Deluxe Edition of "The Blue Album," which was met to enormous fanfare from hardcore fans. (Personally, I think it’s one of their 10 best songs.) Rivers Cuomo wisely decided to carefully plan the unveiling of the remaining demos with various leaks on the "Alone" compilations. However, one last key track remained. Originally planned as a b-side on the never released "Pink Triangle" single, the long fabled "Getting Up And Leaving" finally saw release in November 2010, and definitely lives up to its legendary status, completing a trilogy of sorts along with "Devotion" and "Waiting On You," as probably the most Pet Sounds-influenced stuff Weezer would ever unleash.
43 Robyn “Don’t Fucking Tell Me What To Do” Poor Robyn. When she’s not tortured by her love interest, she’s getting fucked over by her managers and fans pushing her around, or “killing” her, as it were. I understand; my job sucks too. I might feel more empathy if the beat of this song wasn’t so distractingly hot, or if it weren’t so fun to sing along with “my penis is killin’ me.”
42 Earl Sweatshirt feat. Ace Creator “Couch”
“I got you nervous like virgins flirtin’ with uncle Mervin.” It’s been years since the last time we heard Dawson’s Creek, Twilight, Kelly Clarkson and Miley Cyrus all namedropped in the same song. 41 (tie) Pill "Ho Out" & Pill "Action"DJ Drama & Pill wisely re-released this summer's outstanding mixtape 1140: The Overdose without the excessive and annoyingly loud DJ tags. The Youtube files below are unfortunately from the scarred 1st version. Word on the street is that Pill has been "taking his time" with the debut full-length, a very good reason why he did not blow the fuck up in 2010. The streets are ready for some real fire spittin' shit. As long as he keeps up with hooks like these, he’s set to become the next Ludacris or Big Boi. Pretty sure he's already signed to Warner Brothers, so yeah... Get fuckin' ready...
Ho Out:

70 Broken Social Scene “World Sick” Yet another (somewhat) straight-up rock band turns into The Arcade Fire. It could have been worse; at least this one song kicked ass, although we're still unsure why these guys needs 5 guitar players. Nice keyboard fills in this one.
69 (tie) Wolf Haley “Leather Head” & Tyler, The Creator “Splatter” Both of these are from OFWGKTA’s Radical “mixtape,” which was far more of an actual full length album than a mixtape, their only release so far with contributions from all 10 members and for all intents and purposes should be considered their 36 Chambers.
On “Leather Head,” Tyler’s alter-ego Wolf Haley proclaims “I’M THE MODERN DAY IAN CURTIS,” on top of a sample from fucking Liars 2007 self-titled?!?! This is the most balls-out brilliant anti-aesthetic hiphop since Paul’s Boutique. There’s nothing danceable or pop about this whatsoever. The punk-rock of rap has arrived. If Wolf Haley’s full-length is gonna sound like “Leather Head,” bring this shit the fuck on.
Tyler’s nightmare continues in “Splatter,” where dissonant, paranoid keyboard tones clash under some angry growling: “Fuck Tyler, ima change my name to Uncle Phil.” I’m assuming this is a Fresh Prince Of Bel Air reference. We’re waiting for raw hiphop’s 2011 comeback with some painful ass patience. Rap’s equivalent of “Endless Nameless” may be forthcoming.
(Note: Searched "leather head" on both SoundCloud and Youtube to no avail... And it turns out when you do a Google search for "Wolf Haley Leather Head" the fucking Late Night Noise blog is actually the 1st website that comes up. How you like daT?) EDIT: "Leather Head" and the Radical mixtape is free at oddfuture.com.
68 Japandroids “Darkness On The Edge Of Gastown” No Singles acts as an examination of their songwriting tweaks, with “Darkness,” pulled from a 2008 EP, most directly pointing to the repeated fist-in-the-air punk rock call-and-response shit we now know as Japandroids’ calling card, with slightly more heartbreak than the living/in-love lyrics on Post-Nothing.
67 Merchandise “Worthless Apology” It’s been taking a while for this shoegaze-revival thing to amount to anything substantial, but Merchandise.... GOT DAMN. This is beyond almost anything else we’ve heard since the JAMC/MBV days. With regards to No Age, we have an unexpected winner of the “noise-pop artist of the year” title.
No streams are available besides the video which is currently only on vimeo... http://vimeo.com/16015222
66 Kanye West feat. Pusha T “Runaway” Emo-rap lol. It took a minute to realize he's singing about himself.. Calling himself a douchebag & a jerkoff who never takes work off. Egomaniacs aren't typically objective in their self-reflection. You don't see Billy Corgan writing shit like this. P.S. Just confirmed: Kanye and Taylor have already been booked for the next 6 VMA’s so that they can perform songs that refer to their performances from the previous year. Sponsored by Coke. It’ll be great.
65 Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti “Bright Lit Blue Skies” More AM Gold.. This time of the 60’s flavor. This ultimately turned out to be a somewhat faithful cover of some obscure 60’s garage band.
64 Weezer “Trampoline” The most frustrating rock band of all time revealed another handful of lost classics this year, 2 of which were tracks 5 and 7 on November's contractual obligation release Death To False Metal, marketed as an “odds and sods” collection encompassing all of Weezer’s 18 years of existence, even though 8 of its 10 songs were nearly unlistenable demos from the sessions of Make Believe, The Red Album and Ratitude.
“Trampoline” and “Everyone” (which came in at #100 on this list) were recorded during the same 1998 sessions as the Pixies cover “Velouria,” with Mikey Welsh filling in for Matt Sharp on fuzzy overdrive bass, for what was supposed to become the follow-up to Pinkerton. Unfortunately, this album never happened, and with these 3 songs and some various unreleased Pinkerton outtakes, fans get to wonder what might have been had Rivers not gone batshit insane.
63 No Age “Shred And Transcend” Don’t fuck with the formula. Just don’t.
62 Pill “Hear Somebody Comin’” BOOZER. I was happy to hear that Andre 3000 is a big fan of Pill’s mixtapes. If that’s the case, Dre needs to release some new shit and get Pill to bust out some tasty guest verses so that he can finally blow the fuck up already. I said DO IT.
I have to be honest.. when I saw the words "the first installment of Pill's new cooking show" (which was obviously a joke) my first reaction was to think, wow, they're actually going to show him cooking up crack in his own kitchen? ... And with good reason, in the tradition of Clipse, it's pretty much the most frequently referenced subject matter of the songs on 4180: The Prescription, which is probably the #1 album I've listened to most often since Fall 2009, followed closely by Japandroids' Post-Nothing.. I know Pill has released 2 other mixtapes since 4180, but for whatever reason they haven't struck me in quite the same way... His singles have still been tight as fuck, such as "Hear Somebody Comin'" and "On Da Korner..." The latter specifically is truly a testament to Pill being my favorite MC of the moment, as the song itself is decently bland, but is completely taken into an unforeseen realm of badass awesomeness once the flow begins...
I seem to have dug myself into a hole.. Since commentary was added for each song of the previous entry, we have no choice but to continue this path, and to have it done sometime before Thursday. Let's do this..........
21 DJ Quik & Kurupt "9x Outta 10" Something tells me the brilliantly simple production in this was not an accident. DJ Quik's 2009 future-classic will fit in perfectly alongside such ass-kicking in-your-face 00's minimalism heard previously in "Grindin'," "Drop It Like It's Hot" and "Wait (The Whisper Song)."
22 Pill "Trap Goin’ Ham" I'd love to describe Pill's emergence onto the Atlanta hiphop scene as more of an "event," except no one in my circle of friends has any idea who this guy is. Hopefully, that will change in 2010 and beyond. Pill's 2 (brilliant) mixtapes from 2009 sound like the best elements of Ludacris, Lil Wayne and both dudes from Outkast all rolled up into one entity, except with far more urgency and freshness.
23 Tinted Windows "Kind Of A Girl" Tinted Windows seemed like an odd grouping initially. However, looking further into the matter, Fountains Of Wayne and Cheap Trick used to often play shows with Smashing Pumpkins back in the Mellon Collie days, and the Hanson dudes seem willing to collaborate with pretty much anyone who has basic rock-cred. Buzz was unavoidable simply based on their "supergroup" status, and so their success entirely rested on whether Adam Schlesinger could create another one of his huge-sounding catchy-as-all-fuck brain-penetration-machines like "Stacy's Mom" or The Click Five's "Just A Girl," which unfortunately did not happen. But although it wasn't as huge and accessible, "Kind Of A Girl" was the best single from any supergroup in 2009, far surpassing the attempts from Them Crooked Vultures and The Dead Weather (and of course who could forget the abysmal Chickenfoot).
24 Phoenix "Lisztomania" This year's 2 big singles from Phoenix finally earned these guys some long overdue popularity in the United States, along with earning them a boatload in commercial licensing. The only slight bummer is that 2006's It's Never Been Like That was one of those rare albums from the past few years where all 10 songs were kinda outstanding, while this year's flawed Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix ended up getting all the credit.
25 Neon Indian "Should’ve Taken Acid With You" The most prevalent memory I personally kept from Summer 2009 is that it rained about 75% of the time, so weather-wise, we barely received a summer. But music-wise, there seemed to be more summery sounding pop songs than any of the past few years. And it didn't seem uncommonly bizarre for them to continue getting released into late-August and September of this year.
Pitchfork said: The side effects [are] so literal and innocent-- going swimming, ditching your parents, watching the cosmos, making out-- that it could just as easily have been called "Should've Tried to Hold Your Hand."
26 Clipse featuring Kanye West "Kinda Like A Big Deal" Possibly Kanye's best guest-spot of the year. The beat is so groove-a-tron that baffling lyrics such as "plus she got that dumb ass" or the (possibly Snorg Tees quoting) title lyric become instantly forgivable.
27 Raekwon featuring Ghostface Killah "Penitentiary" Thanks to tracks like this one, it became clear that the hype surrounding Only Built 4 Cuban Linx Part 2 wasn't simply built around nostalgia. This album along with Fishscale shows The Wu finally soaring past the bumpy turbulence in the aftermath of Ol' Dirty Bastard.
28 Drake "Best I Ever Had" I refuse to watch Drake's videos as I fear the suave charm in his music will be drastically undermined by recognizing him as the same guy who played a paraplegic basketball player on Degrassi: The Next Generation, the most horrifically compelling TV show intended for pre-teens since 1990 gave us the 1-2 punch of Saved By The Bell and Nickelodeon's Fifteen. And don't let the "rapping" fool any listeners... This shit was made for American Top 40 with just as much pop craftsmanship as Lady GaGa.
29 Dinosaur Jr "Whenever You’re Ready" Dude... It's Dinosaur Jr covering The Zombies. And not only that, but they killed it, and the song was awesome to begin with. There was no way in hell this wasn't going to make the top 30 of this list, almost entirely based upon principle.
30 The Hood Internet "Comfortable Up Here" (Lil Wayne vs Royksopp) I have to admit I don't know very much about this one... I hadn't heard either of the original songs before hearing this mash-up. But whatever works...
31 Superdrag "Everything’ll Be Made Right" Although they have yet to surpass "Sucked Out," Superdrag consistently pump out a few killer tracks on every album they've released since, this one being their 2009 highlight.
32 Silversun Pickups "The Royal We" There is hope for straight-up rock in 2010 and beyond. Silversun was recently nominated for a well-deserved "Best New Artist" Grammy. It's unfortunate that Muse blew up the instant they decided to release their worst album ever. If Silversun didn't seem like such nice guys (and girl), I'd encourage them to push Muse off the stage during their next high-profile TV appearance and break into either this song or "Panic Switch."
33 Kid CuDi featuring Kanye West & Common "Make Her Say" Common's buzzkill verse at the end prevented "Make Her Say" from placing a lot higher, but the drums are too good to keep it from falling too low. Without the drums, this would've been "that weird song where they sampled Lady GaGa to make some quick cash."
34 Kid CuDi "Sky Might Fall" If he knows what's good for him, Kid CuDi should prolly have sent a Christmas card out to Kanye this year.
35 Dinosaur Jr "Your Weather" Lou Barlow also released a solo album this year with some classic melancholy Sebadoh-sounding stuff. But nothing beats hearing one of Lou's best recent songs performed with the full force of The Dinosaur.
36 Ryan Leslie "Diamond Girl" The world needs more post-Neptunes R&B. I had no idea that this single was actually released late 2007, but it's the lead track off his self-titled full-length which was released in February of this year.
37 Doves "Compulsion" Apparently, Doves are still around. This track was floating around Sirius 26's playlist over the summer, from what's probably their best album since Lost Souls in 2000.
38 A Place To Bury Strangers "In Your Heart" It's not everyday a modern band figures out how to tweak their sound to authentically channel a specific era of music. Either that, or they stumbled upon some outtakes from a long-lost and awesomely loud UK shoegaze band circa 1990.
39 Blitzen Trapper "Preacher’s Sister’s Boy" A B-side from the Black River Killer EP, I was unable to find it anywhere on Youtube or elsewhere online, and so instead the audio file below links to "God + Suicide," which is the sister-track to "Preacher's Sister's Boy," as they're very similar in style and both are under 2:20. I'm about 68% certain we'll hear a new Blitzen Trapper album in 2010.
40 New Boyz "You’re A Jerk" If one-hit-wonders existed anymore, this one would have fit in just fine. If you hate fun (a.k.a. if you're a jerk), don't bother to fuck with "You're A Jerk." If this becomes the template for a new genre called "skinny-jeans rap," I will have zero complaints. Did you learn how to jerk yet?
I'll try adding some commentary this time around.. Mostly personal opinion stuff.. Prolly the type of commentary I will eventually regret writing, but whatever.. We need some content.
41 Animal Collective "Bluish" "My Girls" and "Summertime Clothes" were instantly catchy, but the rest of the album took a few listens before really starting to fully understand this aura. "Bluish" was the moment when I decided that I could fuck with Merriweather Post Pavillion. ...cascading treetops caressing a blue skyline, and floating.. always floating...
42 Drake "Successful" Taste My Kids "guilty pleasures" list might not happen this year, or at least not one with commentary, but this will be there.. The guilt is mostly derived from the lyrics in Trey Songz chorus, literally translated to the following: "I want the money, the money and the cars, cars and the clothes, the hoes, I suppose, I just wanna be, I just wanna be successful." LMAO. The pleasure mostly lies in the production.. Good choices with these keyboard patches.
43 Junior Boys "Hazel" I've crossed paths with many people in 2009 who were randomly pumping this song from their laptops. As far as I can tell, Junior Boys's 3rd record is their least consistent, although "Hazel" deserves a spot on their eventual greatest hits album.
44 Sufjan Stevens "There’s Too Much Love" You couldn't ask for a more exciting preview for the Illinoise follow-up, which STILL has no release date (and don't hold your breath throughout 2010...) But when it does happen, we'll be damn good and ready. For now, the only way to hear this song is through live Youtube videos.
45 Phoenix "Girlfriend" This is another one of those that makes me nostalgic for six months ago.. Also, call me crazy for this, but the original mix from the "leaked" version of Wolfgang is slightly superior, which I'm pretty sure is the mix linked here...
46 Kid CuDi "Day N Nite (Nightmare)" This one is all production, as the lyrics are kinda on the wack side of the fence. But try not to let the production hypnotize yo dumb ass. You'll fall into a trance.
47 Sufjan Stevens "You Are The Blood" If it were up to me, every thesaurus in the world should now somehow include this song as a new synonym for "epic."
48 Das Racist vs Wallpaper "Combination Pizza Hut And Taco Bell" NOT the best "remix" job of 2009, but possibly the best improvement upon its nearly unlistenable original version, since the joke becomes infinitely more tolerable, and actually starts to generate some genuine lulz. However, the "fire in the disco/fire in the TACO BELL" comparisons become that much more questionable now that tenor saxophones have been included. (Overplayed? Almost. I'm actually happy this song didn't blow up on commercial radio. I could go a month without hearing it at this point.)
49 Dinosaur Jr "Over It" A great song that became better in part because of its video.. It's hard to tell if the band members are still friends, or if this recent Dinosaur Jr reunion thing is just a case of a few dudes putting aside their differences to make some extra cash. Either way, it gave us one of the best albums of the past few years.
50 Yeah Yeah Yeahs "Heads Will Roll" Holy crap, this band has improved vastly. I hope they continue this "synth" phase into their next few albums, because this is the Yeah Yeah Yeahs I was hoping they would be based on all the 2003-era hype.
51 The Brontosaur "One" The chord progression in this one sounds a little like "Weeds" from Pulp's We Love Life LP, which is definitely a good thing. I seem to be the only person I know who loves this album, and I'm trying my best to push it onto people through mix CD's & my radio shift, etc, etc.. There's always room for straight-up guitar-rock, especially when the drums are this sick. (Big up's to Kellii Scott.) | Full album on MySpace |
52 The Flaming Lips "Worm Mountain" Distorted stoner bass. Oh HELL yeah. A friend described this album to me as "claustrophobic" which seems like a spot-on term here. Something tells me these dudes were starting to get tired of pressing the "confetti" button during their live shows, and this is by far their most refreshing change of direction since The Soft Bulletin.
53 Taylor Swift "Forever And Always" White chicks LOL. Is this really country? If so, this is the best country song of the past 20 years, which is weird because I just read that this was possibly written about one of the Jonas Brothers. I have no desire to pay attention to Taylor Swift's lyrics, so the celebrity gossip attached to this song is meaningless to me. (Also I just read that Jonas Brothers' publicist forbade interviewers from having reporters ask them about the South Park episode where Mickey Mouse kicks their asses and refers to them as "you piece of shit".)
54 Passion Pit "The Reeling" In the process of trying to get that "authentic 80's" sound, a lot of bands have recently been (seemingly) accidentally coming up with some great singles, this being one of them.
55 Grizzly Bear "While You Wait For The Others" Good album.. I like all the songs.. and yet I'm still not completely feeling the hype. I'm just mostly tired of music that sounds like this. The bands who are currently writing most of the best songs are unfortunately also among those who have forgotten that they have a pair of nads. And it really only takes a slight adjustment to turn up that nad-dial.. (For example, take a listen to what The Hood Internet did with "Two Weeks." Maybe I'm crazy here, but is def an improvement from the original.) Moving on... "While You Wait For The Others," while emasculated, is still a 2009 classic.
56 Clipse "All Eyes On Me" Sick beat. It's a shame Til The Casket Drops was unable to maintain the strong momentum of Lord Willin' and Hell Hath No Fury, but at least a handful of their newer songs are still fresh.
57 Pill "Dimes Of Hard" I couldn't find "Dimes Of Hard" anywhere to stream online, so instead this links to "Glass" from Pill's more recent mixtape, 4075: The Refill. "Dimes Of Hard" samples Ryan Leslie's "Diamond Girl" and is equally as good as the original.
58 The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart "Contender" I'm really happy about this shoegaze-revival thing. Where Autolux and Silversun Pickups took the route cleared by My Bloody Valentine, bands like The Ravonettes and The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart (while unfortunately named) have been enjoying the journey previously traveled by The Jesus And Mary Chain.
59 Ne-Yo "Mad" Fingers are crossed for a new Ne-Yo album in 2010.. "Mad" was a Spring 2009 single from his previous record.
60 Washed Out "Feel It All Around" This is a rare case where I felt nostalgia the first time I heard a song... In this case, it somehow pulled me back to the Napster days. I've concluded that this is not a common opinion, but it sounds like something I would have downloaded from Napster, after reading that it was included on the NME's 50 best singles of 2000 or 2001.
If MTV still existed (in its classic form), it's possible "Trap Goin' Ham" could do what "Nuthin' But A G Thing" did for west coast gangsta rap in 1993. This is true grit, with so many brilliantly rugged and real images. It's the genuine dirty south in its purest form. Apparently, this video was SO real, that at least one gentleman threatened the camera crew with a swinging florescent lightbulb. Craziest video shoot ever?
TASTE MY KIDS is a digital newsletter compiling recommendations for a happier and healthier existence, most often in the form of "best-of" lists, youtube posts, album or movie reviews, and various scribblings. We lived on Geocities starting in August 2000. In January 2009, times got tough and posts were on hiatus until a new host could be located. Geocities eventually died anyway, and now we live on blogspot. True story.
