Quarentemo "Maybe"

There is a mechanism inside Quarentemo that allows them to gaze unflinchingly into the pitch black of their psyche and emerge with a beautiful, bittersweet song every time. The frenzied shifts between chaotic rhythm and acoustic reverie mirror their longing for a point in the past when things were more clear. “Maybe next year we'll be better,” they sing. This atmosphere, with its patience and light, adds a sense of freedom to their delivery and allows them to find new wisdom in old worries.

"Lowt (L​)​ive" At Trumbull Day

The world famous Lowt Ide have released their first album in six years.

They are a band who has always been closely associated with "instant stardom."

Lowt Ide never toured, but they released four albums and played one-off shows consistently in Massachusetts and Connecticut from 2000 to 2010.

Their appearances slowed down in the early 2010s. In November 2012, they released a 10-song mixtape. In March 2013, they played what became their last public appearance, MC'ing and performing mini-sets between the bands at a Fort Flesh show in New Haven CT. (They handed out awards to all the bands who played. The awards were made of used CDs and coathangers.)

They announced the album Tag Sale on Facebook in 2010, and it finally saw a release in 2014. They've been on hiatus since then, but they've been posting on their Facebook account once or twice a year and plan to eventually reform.

In the meantime, their discography was posted to Bandcamp in September 2014 to celebrate ten years since their first album, re-released with a "Deluxe Edition" sticker. However, CD2 -- the "Bonus disc" of this Deluxe Edition -- was never completed. The re-release intended to include Lowt Ide's now legendary monumental live set performed at Trumbull Day on June 28, 2003 on the big Trumbull Day stage.

Six years later, quarantine happened, which enabled the project's completion. The tapes were located and remixed, and now this collection can finally see the light of day.

Lowt (L)ive At Trumbull Day is CD2 of the deluxe edition. Due to the long wait, the band have elected to also give this album its own separate release. The set includes several non-album tracks, perhaps most notably "Hair (Brew) Lampshade Ceiling," a song with four movements performed live many times but never included on their studio albums.

It also includes an expanded 3-minute industrial techno version of "Al Gore" and a few unreleased covers, notably an impromptu "Shine" by Collective Soul, and a few covers of local Connecticut bands: Hoveral's "You Got Issues," Ghost Town Riot's "Just Don't Care," and two songs from Splice, "Way" and "Let It Bleed."

After various setbacks, Dead Wives has finally posted the first volume of a planned trilogy of demo releases recorded with guidance from the elusive Lip Keebler. Released about 3 weeks ago, Buzzy Fuzzy should be followed next year by Satan Smile and Wish Upon a Pentagram. (Despite the interpretations of songs from Ween and Nicki Minaj, the other two releases will likely not include cover songs.) The song sequence of Buzzy Fuzzy loosely follows a thematic progression built around a swarm of bees that reproduces to an absurdly large size after becoming possessed by Satan.

"T.Scene releases" has been slowing down since the 2nd half of 2012. However, tentative t.scene plans have been announced for 2013, currently including Lowt Ide's long-awaited LP Tag Sale, the compilation cassette Slut Life 2, and a digital boxed-set of covers from the elusive Lip Keebler.

As for Dead Wives, the official follow-up to their 2011 EP Scuz Bucket is promised for Spring 2013. In the meantime, a new demo collection has been posted under the name "Lip Keebler's Dead Wives," suggesting this as some type of collaborative project. "Bitch We Deep" has been re-recorded after previously appearing on 2011's The Crack Game, an LP-length demo collection that has since vanished from the internet (aside from a few stray leftovers on Soundcloud). Yo Lip is currently available for stream on Bandcamp...

Only related due to a coincidentally similar band name, Dream Husbands' debut EP was posted in mid-February. They are the newest project from the same gents who recorded two outstanding LP's as The Smooth Hands. Hunky Husbands includes many of the same recording aesthetics but with a new direction, a logical progression from The Smooth Hands' initial adventures. Their first collection of songs is also currently available for stream on Bandcamp...

"Slut Life" tracklisting unveiled

T.Scene's first official cassette compilation, and the first comp overall since 10 years ago (the last one being "Trumbull Scene Volume 2" in the summer of 2002) is hopefully possibly getting released on March 22, which is 8 days from now...

Any of the bands on this comp who are currently out and performing shows may have copies available... We're going to try our absolute best to send copies out to them so they can be distributed to fans... The artists on this comp will also be encouraged to make copies. If it turns out to be an enormous ordeal, we may just end up posting the whole thing on bandcamp, because 60 copies divided by 17 bands is like... barely anything at all... Of course we would have to get everyone's permission before posting it on bandcamp, so it will probably be even longer before that happens....

Lowt Ide is celebrating the 5-year-anniversary of their 2006 album Xica with a re-release, posting the album on their Bandcamp page. As of right now, we've been considering this our favorite Lowt Ide album, but it's hard to say... It's definitely varied and abrasive, with higher production value than the previously posted This Album Fucking Sucks. And it closes with three enormous epics... (And we normally avoid the 2011 definition of "epic," so you can rest assured all three songs are pretty huge...)

There's a somewhat faithful (but also very warped) cover of Satyricon's "Mother North" - all 6.5 minutes of it.

And of course who could forget "Ryan Healey College," a collage of Ryan Healey samples mostly pulled from Splice's self-titled debut and from their EP More Crap From Splice, as well as a few brief clips from a live New Haven performance. It's one of the most unlistenable and torturous monstrosities to ever grace any record. It's also fucking amazing.

Last but not least is "Down On The Corner," posing as a CCR cover while it actually contains none of its lyrics and sounds nothing like it (aside from a 60-second tease right in the center of the song), although it does contain a feed from an AM Christian radio broadcast. Once you get past the first minute or two, it gets kinda trippy and fucked up.

The long-delayed sixth and latest installment of Dead Wives’ series of demo tapes is now available for anyone who’s interested, streaming on Soundcloud or from Mediafire download.

As stated when Demon Priest was posted, “these are mostly just about trying out new ideas and seeing what works.” So please don’t call this “the new album,” because it’s not. It’s just a demo collection.

Also important: Previous demos such as “Milk and Water” or “The Chocolate Factory” excluded many songs, some of which were later re-added as bonus tracks. However, “The Crack Game” marks a new era of “quantity over quality” demos for Dead Wives. (So just a warning.. Normally, tracks 8 through 13 would not have been included here... Also 12 and 13 are only available on Mediafire.)

Everything was recorded with a single microphone (for two reasons: #1 some effort was made to recreate the "basement band practice" atmosphere, and #2 due to lack of resources). As a consequence, this might have the lowest production value out of any Dead Wives demo so far (which means it’s pretty bad).

As previously noted on their Facebook profile, there’s a few more “guitar solos” than usual. In more than one case, this clever tactic was used to make up for a lack of “actual songs.”

“Girl Cursive” (a circa-2005 relic) and “Jello Stars” are probably their two most melodramatic “emo” songs so far. They’re also both difficult to sing, and for whatever reason, the decision was made to NOT double-track. So both songs ended up with embarrassingly weaker-than-usual vox. Whatever.

The drums on “Pinhead” were borrowed from Hoveral’s “User Friendly” and from Bernie’s “Kill Your Parents.”

August 2000: A month after Splice’s last show, 2 of the band members form Low Tide and play their first show a day later. They vow to never record an album and only perform live. (Two songs from their first show appear here as bonus tracks, “Showtune” and “Healey Ford,” intended to be a car commercial for Ryan H’s car dealership where Splice used to practice.)

February 2001: They play their third show at UMass Amherst with Karl Z on keyboards, Jeff P on snare drum, and some dude named Mitch on lead vocals who ended up disrobing down to a pair of women’s underwear throughout the course of the show, causing the entire crowd of 80 people to get up and leave all at once. (“I Love My Appendix” from this show appears here as a bonus track.)

December 2002: By this point, through internet searches, they realize there are several other bands called Low Tide, but there was no band called Lowt Ide. Now a three-piece band (Russ F and Mike F with Karl Z), they decide seemingly out of nowhere to release one completely inaccessible 3-disc album. Assuming they’ll be able to complete this quickly, that same night, they write the numbers 1 through 115 in a notebook and fill it with absurd song titles and cover choices. (They normally think of the song titles before recording the songs.) They start recording within the next few days, putting a checkmark next to the song titles as they recorded them.

May 2003: They take a break from shows. Meanwhile, they’ve already filled up at least three tapes.

June 2003: They record an unreleased live album in Russ’s living room to a crowd of 6 people and call it “Live at MSG.” (Three songs appear from this as bonus tracks: “Driving Home and a Slut Swallowed My Load,” the cover of “We Didn’t Start The Fire” and their cover of a high school band on the song “I Just Don’t Care.”)

May 2004: All six tapes of shit and noise are converted one-by-one to a digital format, and a few weeks later, the album is mastered, sorted into a manageable tracklisting, and titled “There’s Absolutely No Fucking Way in Hell We’ll Ever Get Signed to a Major Label,” containing around 90 studio tracks and 15 bonus tracks (or something close to that). (An additional 20 songs are never used in the final mastering.) Also by this point, Karl had left Lowt Ide and they were back down to two members, although still encouraging guest appearances from their friends on many songs.

September 2004: They decide the album is too massive for anyone – including the band members themselves – to completely digest. They narrow down the “strongest” material and release it with artwork as their first LP, “Live at Madison Square Garden.” No one really cares, but that’s ok.

Early-2005: They hope to release an album of the worst songs from these sessions titled “This Album Fucking Sucks” which was abandoned soon after. Instead they take the best of the remaining songs and burn them onto a CD-R. For two years, that one CD-R is the only known copy of “This Album Fucking Sucks” as the version posted here.

March 2007: A tracklisting is added to Lowt Ide’s myspace page. Several copies are burned and handed out at a series of 3 shows they played in Danbury. The artwork is influenced by the movie Caddyshack.

“Empathy,” “Way” and “Moonshitz” are warped versions of Splice songs written by their former band leader Ryan H.

“I Don’t Know Much” is a cover of Aaron Neville. “Black” is Pearl Jam. “Are You Gonna Go My Way” is Lenny Kravitz. “When You’re Gone” is Matchbox 20. “Higher” is Creed.

The song title “Patrick Swayze is Sexy (I Would Pay Money to Touch Him)” is a quote from Gummo.

“Mish Bish & Phish” is about their seventh grade woodshop teacher.

Not sure why we didn't post this sooner... Probably because we wanted to wait before deciding on whether to post the new Ovlov on mediafire, but in this case it's not really necessary... So here we've embedded the Bandcamp link for Ovlov's big new 7-11 release (purposely leaked by the band on 7/11/11), complete with a "pay as you want" download link... Here's some quick commentary....

No confirmation exists as to whether the 4 songs comprise a story (as possibly an easier-to-swallow approach to a concept album) although the songs (and album art) seem to be connected by common themes, musically, lyrically and production-wise...

The songwriting definitely presents a progression from 2009's impressive Crazy Motorcycle Jump EP, still maintaining abundant Pixies-influence, although on What's So Great About The City, the previous hints of Weezer have been replaced by Dinosaur Jr, Smashing Pumpkins and hints of shoegaze, especially on the EP's title track, "The City."

We're hoping for more Ovlov releases within the coming months since we know they have a loaded arsenal of fresh rock ready to launch at any time.

Pulled from our review of their first EP, this is the best description of Ovlov we could pull together: Throw this on with some buds and reenact the "1979" video. It will make your summer that much more complete.

3D got its title from the 3 members of GLU, who used the names Dirk, Dick and Duke to protect their anonymity. All of the songs on 3D were recorded ENTIRELY using samples recorded and pasted into Windows Sound Recorder (and this is back in 1998 when it was a decently minimal program).. The concept was to create "evil" sounding electronic music, mostly based around dance beats, which ends up sounding more funny than evil as a result of the minimal production value. Some creativity and imagination was involved in order to produce the individual samples.. For example in "Satan: Worship Me," the side of a CD jewel-case is scratched with a fingernail to simulate record-scratching. Beat boxing noises are individually sampled for "Titanic."

There were 2 versions of 3D: #1 was a 9-song demo tape. #2 was a 16-song cassette-only EP. Tracks 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 8 and 10 appeared on both. "Jews R People 2" and "Accord" also appeared on both, but for this reissue we've instead included the more complete "remixes" which were only on the EP version. "Mister Gerbik" is the original first song on the EP and has been included here also. (The files for the other 6 songs are currently lost for whatever reason, which includes the demos of "Fastazz" and "Accord," two versions of "Anal Sax," "Chuggin' Dick's Sax Remix" which was a remix of Z-Rock Hawaii, and "Universal Parallels" which sampled Portishead.)

Secrets (1998-2000) is a collection of GLU's MP3.com singles and other projects mostly recorded by Dick using programs other than Windows Sound Recorder. In fact, the last 6 songs (all from 2000) were Dick on his own, just prior to when he started using the name Stu Wanker. "Electric Zelda," "Porno: NY" and "Swing Easy" are all group efforts from 1999. "Ash Wednesday" and "Boo Foo" are experimental bits recorded by Duke in 1996 but have been included here as they were eventually adopted as GLU tracks. A drunken voicemail from Dirk appears in "Hangin' With My Homies." A Pink Floyd cover recorded by Dirk and Duke (as G-Spot, using the names G-Zuz and G-Niuz) were sampled for "Mother (Hey Mom Remix)." (One remaining track titled "Cure Song" was also lost for whatever reason, which sampled 3 or 4 songs by The Cure.)

T.Scene update

For those keeping track (which is almost certainly zero people), the Interface comp now completes every recording we have for the bands Jay and Luke formed between 1994 and 1999...

The All American Rap Band can be heard on Trumbull Scene: The Big Hits and were also responsible for the music in this clip...



NTT was next, which stood for either Nipple Touch Tip or Nipple Touch Tit. After that was the first version of The Elite which is remembered by us for the song "Rotten To The Core" (never recorded unfortunately) and the 2nd version of The Elite had a song called "Frozen Hotdogs." Interface came soon after that and was their inevitable punk rock group, which much later lead to the formation of Bernie and Hoveral.

Between Interface and Bernie, Jay and Mike ended up focusing on their electronic music project GLU with John B. A complete collection of GLU's recordings should be the next t.scene release coming within the next few days.

In light of recent events, T.Scene has been inspired to uncover Interface's practice tapes recorded between November 1997 and June 1998, in remembrance of their guitarist Brian M. We sadly have just recently learned of Brian passing away which happened in April of this year. The lineup of Interface was Brian M on guitar, Luke F on bass, Jay W on rhythm guitar and percussion, Mike F on drums. All 4 band members sang lead at some point. Neil B was also intended to be their permanent lead singer but became unavailable after 1 practice. Their original song "Homeless Lovin'" was recorded with Neil on a tape that was lost soon afterwards. Their remaining originals were two instrumentals, both called "Bleachead," and "No Vision," which was also interpreted by 3 of the 4 band members a year later in Bernie. Aside from those, this comp includes 2 Iggy Pop covers, 2 Who covers, and 2 Sex Pistols covers (or Sex Pistols covering The Monkees, whatever you wanna call it)... As this tape was never intended for any official release, the title "Interface: 1998" was chosen to give the collection more of an endearing "time capsule" quality.

We actually had requests for more Dead Wives, which was unexpected and nice. Out of the 4 that have yet to be uploaded, Hellrazor is probably the demo tape I'd be least embarrassed to post here, even though the mix is really bad and the vocals are kinda not that impressive as they were recorded entirely in one take at 4AM on a random Thursday morning back when my work hours were 2:30PM to 11PM .. which I actually had some odd nostalgia for recently..

Dead Wives will never perform "Capitol Hill" live even though I do really like the song.. It was supposed to sound like a combination of about 8 bands (The Modern Lovers and Interpol come to mind), but instead people told me they thought it sounded like Blink 182... ugh.

There were 3 versions of "Recycled." The first one sounds like Wire. The second one sounds like Franz Ferdinand. The third one sounds like Electric Wizard. The 2nd version is the only one that got finished (for better or worse).

"Blood" was an ongoing project since back in like 2003.. An 8-minute version was recorded for Milk And Water but wasn't included. At the time of recording, Phoenix had just recently performed "1901" and "Lisztomania" on Saturday Night Live, and so the original atmosphere of the song ended up getting changed... A regrettable decision, but whatever...

These were all recorded between March and April 2009, except for 12 and 13 were recorded at the end of May on a boring Saturday when I was missing my friends and feelin Yo La Tengo.. "Your Little Sailboat" is a Smooth Hands song (with an amazing video that probably isn't on Youtube) and "White People" is a Smile Democracy song. Both songs are so lovely and I felt like trying to make them sound like YLT... The singing is really quiet because I did it in my bedroom and I didn't want my roomies to hear.

My friend Dan and myself recorded "Good Suffering" on another boring Saturday in April... Someone left a cello in the band room, and we had access to a creepy sounding organ, so we tried to make the best of our surroundings... I don't think Dan liked it, but personally I think it sounds awesome.

Dead Wives' first ever "official" non-demo-tape release is finally finished and is currently streaming on Soundcloud. The songs are all re-recordings of older songs.. "Crash Landing" and "Wilt" (previously titled "Mild," "Melt," and "untitled") are originally from 2007's "Milk & Water" tape. "VHS" (previously titled "Move In") was originally found on 2009's "Hellrazor" tape, and "Don't Stop Bleeding" was first heard on last summer's "Demon Priest" demo. It was recorded between November and December 2010 by Mike Henss at Enox Productions in Newtown, CT.

I was sadly unable to retrieve all of the scatterbrain album art for this release (which included strange drawings, information about the songs, and a Calvin & Hobbes comic among other things), as its creator was unable to pass it over to me during our radio show last night. But I got anxious, and I'm posting this album anyway... Part of the less-than-spectacular sound quality of these mp3s can be attributed to myself, as I converted this to mp3 a few months ago with my analogue 4-track, which somehow sounds as though it degraded the quality from the way the exact same songs sounded on Don't Panic's Myspace Page: http://www.myspace.com/canyoubelievetherewasadaylastweekwheniwasntdrunk...

Here's what I can remember about it: "Marine Recruiter" was influenced by Bruce Springsteen's Nebraska LP, and "I'm Sorry Mister Rogers" is a cover of Kenny Rogers' "The Gambler." Knowing what I know about Don't Panic, I'd have to guess alcohol consumption played a mighty large part in the production of this tape. This is the first time this album has been available digitally, and this specific version of Just Be Cool offers an exact replica of how the original tape was presented. Tracks 1 through 4 make up side A, and track 5 through 7 are side B. After the end of tracks 4 and 7, some hardcore punk songs show up out of nowhere, since that's what Don't Panic was taping over when he recorded this monstrosity. And yes, there are some static-laced and strange monsters to be found here...

KC Quilty has recently shortened their name to simply Quilty. I'm really bad at reviewing, but I can at least say I hear a lot of my favorite bands ever in their music, such as The Breeders, Failure, Pavement, and PJ Harvey.. I'd like to think bands such as Quilty contain the sound of where rock music will eventually be headed, returning to distortion, feedback, sludge, grunge, slack, loud, guitar rock. I know more great bands like this are out there, but for whatever reason they're just SO difficult to find these days. One would figure with the internet making it so simple to find music, that somewhere a resource for straight-up "loud guitar rock" (that doesn't sound like asses) might arrive somewhere. But really, as far as I can find, there's nothing much right now. Last year's discovery of The Brontosaur's album was almost a complete fluke.. Straight up loud guitar rock is due for a more mainstream return, and when it does, fans of music that sounds like Quilty and The Brontosaur might hopefully be able to access it far more easily. For now, enjoy the Quilty record... Trust me; it's kickass.

Before Hoveral, there was Bernie... There was more to Bernie than the 9 songs collected here, but this is essentially the set one would need for all of the original demos recorded during their roughly one full year of existence. All other songs they played live were either originals previously demoed in other bands ("No Vision") or covers ("Stuck On You," "Molly's Lips," "Unbelievable," "Song 2," etc, etc..) One thing I always loved about Bernie was that all four band members were lead vocalists, and three of the band's four members sing lead at some point throughout these 9 tracks.

The 9 songs here are collected chronologically. The first three tracks are from Bernie's demo tape recorded in Spring 1999. The live version of "You Got Issues" was also included on Trumbull Scene: The Big Hits, and has been included here as well, as it's currently the only known recording of this song, from Bernie's long-fabled performance at Tashua Knolls in July 1999. Tracks 5 through 8 were demoed by Adam, Luke and Mike, and do not include Jay as he was at an out-of-state college at the time. However, in these recordings, one may start to hear the forming of Hoveral's sound, especially on "March Of The Dead Basketball Players." The "tourettes" cover has been included as it was the only cover demoed, and not a live recording. Track 9 is an instrumental early demo of what eventually became Hoveral's "User Friendly," and includes songwriting and input from all four band members.
